Current Account Hacked and Your Dispute Denied? Steps to Take

The first sign may be a password-reset email, a changed phone number, or a balance that suddenly looks wrong. You report the problem through Current, but the response says the transfer was authorized or that the investigation is closed.

An account-takeover dispute needs a clear timeline. How the person obtained access, who initiated the payment, and what happened after you reported it can all affect your options.

If money left your Current account without permission and your dispute was denied, request a case review. Keep your security alerts and denial notice available.

Secure access and preserve what happened

Use Current’s official app or website to find support and account-security options. Secure the associated email account and contact your mobile carrier if you suspect someone took over your phone number. Do not use a support number sent by an unfamiliar caller or message.

Before old messages become difficult to retrieve, save:

  • Alerts about new logins or changes to your contact information.
  • Messages from anyone claiming to represent Current or a bank.
  • The date and time of each disputed transfer.
  • Your first report and the support response.
  • Any account restrictions or loss of access that prevented you from reviewing activity.

You do not need to reconstruct every technical detail before reporting missing money. State the facts you know promptly and supplement them when you obtain more information.

Who actually sent the payment?

There is a meaningful difference between a fraudster logging in and sending a payment, and a consumer personally sending a payment because someone lied about its purpose.

The CFPB explains that a fraudster’s use of stolen or fraudulently obtained credentials can result in an unauthorized electronic transfer. A payment you personally initiated requires a separate analysis. Tell your lawyer exactly which steps you took, including any code you shared or payment button you pressed. Identify the bank behind your Current account

The app name does not resolve every question about legal responsibility. Obtain your deposit agreement and identify the bank associated with the affected account. Keep the agreement with your statements and dispute messages.

The Current agreement reviewed here identifies Choice Financial Group as the bank and Current as the service partner. That does not mean every product or historical account uses identical terms. Identifying the correct agreement helps an attorney evaluate the proper parties and the process for bringing a claim. Current/Choice deposit agreement.

What if Current already said there was no error?

For covered disputes, Regulation E provides a right to a written explanation and, upon request, the documents relied on in making the determination. Ask for those materials. Compare them with the account changes, messages, and transfers you documented. Regulation E, §1005.11(d).

A request for documents is more specific than asking customer service to “look again.” It gives you and your lawyer a basis to understand what was decided and whether important facts remain unresolved.

Can the bank cover arbitration filing fees?

Under §III(j) of the Current/Choice agreement reviewed, the bank pays filing, administration, and arbitrator fees at the customer’s request when the relief sought is $75,000 or less. Larger claims have additional provisions addressing financial inability and prohibitive costs. Attorney fees are addressed separately. Read the arbitration-cost provision.

Your attorney should confirm your agreement and any required pre-arbitration steps before submitting a demand.

Request a review of your Current account-takeover claim

Support may have closed the dispute, but a legal review can examine the transfer and the response together. Contact Bank Dispute Law about your Current dispute. Start with when access changed, how much disappeared, when you reported it, and the explanation you received.

General information, not legal advice. Results depend on the facts and applicable law. Requesting a review does not create an attorney-client relationship.
