PEFCU Reversed Your Provisional Credit? What Members Should Keep
Temporary credit can make a PEFCU dispute appear settled until a later debit removes it. First determine whether the adjustment was provisional or final and which transaction it concerned. A reversal is not, by itself, proof of unlawful handling, but the notices and timing deserve attention.
Match the three account entries
Find the original disputed debit, the temporary credit, and the reversal. Record the date and amount of each. If there were multiple claims, match them by claim number and ask for clarification where the descriptions are unclear. Do not count the reversal as a new independent fraud loss without explaining its connection to the original transaction.
Keep the final findings and reversal notice
Under Regulation E’s adverse-decision procedures, the institution must provide written findings for a no-error or different-error determination and explain the right to request the documents relied on. When it debits provisional credit under the rule, additional notification requirements apply to the debit date and amount.
Check the limited protection for scheduled payments
The reversal rule includes a five-business-day protection for certain checks and preauthorized transfers that would otherwise have been paid, subject to the regulation’s conditions. An alternative procedure involves advance notice of a debit scheduled five business days later. This is not a promise that every new card purchase must go through.
If a scheduled payment was returned, save its authorization, scheduled date, return notice, and associated fees. The transaction type matters. Ask PEFCU to explain the balance impact and which payments it processed after the notice.
Ask for records before sending another broad appeal
A focused request might identify the claim and ask for the written decision, supporting documents, and date and amount of the temporary-credit reversal. Add one specific factual inconsistency if you have one. Keep proof of receipt and the resulting response.
For a free review, provide the original report and a simple balance timeline showing what the reversal changed. Separate bank fees from merchant penalties and explain each. An attorney can assess the transfer, investigation, and reversal procedures together. Do not assume a pending internal appeal suspends the reversal or extends a legal deadline.
Frequently asked questions
Was temporary credit a promise of reimbursement?
Usually it is an interim adjustment while a claim is investigated. Read the actual notice before treating it as final.
Should I include fees from the reversal?
Yes. List each fee, its date, and why you believe it resulted from the reversal. Recoverability depends on the facts and applicable law.
