Chase Credit-Card Billing Error: Why a Written Dispute Matters

A duplicate Chase credit-card charge or missing issued credit can be easy to spot and surprisingly difficult to resolve. Preserve the billing-error process while pursuing customer-service help. A phone call or app request may not satisfy the federal written-notice requirements by itself.

Locate the billing-inquiries instructions

Use the billing-rights notice for your particular Chase credit account. The designated billing-error address may differ from the payment address. Electronic submission can qualify when the creditor designates the method in its billing-rights statement; keep proof that you used that method.

Work from the first statement showing the error

For the standard FCBA process, the creditor generally must receive the notice within 60 calendar days after transmitting the first statement reflecting the error. Record the statement date and delivery evidence. Sending a letter on day 60 may not be enough if it arrives later. For a credit that should have appeared but did not, identify the statement where the omission first occurred.

Explain the error without overstating it

  • For a duplicate: identify both entries and the single purchase you authorized.
  • For an incorrect amount: attach the receipt or order confirmation.
  • For a missing credit: identify the issued refund and the statement where it should appear.
  • For nondelivery: describe what was promised and what actually arrived.

A disagreement over an accepted item’s quality can involve different protections. Explain the facts instead of labeling every merchant disagreement “fraud.” Keep copies rather than sending your only originals.

Track the response and keep paying undisputed amounts

After a qualifying notice, acknowledgment is generally due within 30 days unless the matter is already resolved. Resolution must occur within two complete billing cycles, no later than 90 days. During the protected process, you may withhold the disputed amount and related charges, but unrelated payments remain due. The issuer can reject a claim after a reasonable investigation; it must explain why and supply documentary evidence of indebtedness on request.

These duties come from Regulation Z’s billing-error provisions. Our FCBA practice page explains the distinctions among a legal billing dispute, a network chargeback, and unauthorized-card-use protections.

Frequently asked questions

Does paying the bill erase a billing-error claim?

Payment alone does not prevent a timely billing-error notice. Preserve the statement and notice dates.

Do Chase checking-account terms govern this claim?

Do not assume so. Bring the credit-card agreement and billing-rights notice for the account at issue.
