Waiting for Fifth Third Provisional Credit? Dates and Exceptions to Check
No temporary credit after a Fifth Third fraud report does not always mean the bank missed a deadline. The first question is which error-resolution rules apply and when a qualifying report was received. A pending debit-card claim and a credit-card chargeback are different processes.
Identify the original error-notice date
Use your earliest report that identified the account and explained the suspected error with the available transaction details. Save the acknowledgment, call notes, or messages. Ask the bank which receipt date it is using if later communications show a different date.
Understand the initial investigation period
For many consumer electronic-transfer disputes, the institution generally has 10 business days to determine whether an error occurred. If it uses the usual extended investigation process, it generally must provisionally credit the account within that initial period and satisfy other requirements. Certain new-account transfers use a 20-business-day initial period. These are business days, not calendar days.
Check whether written confirmation was requested
If the institution properly requests written confirmation of an oral notice and does not receive it within 10 business days, it may continue investigating without provisional credit. That does not mean it can postpone starting the investigation until the writing arrives. Save the request itself and your response, including proof of receipt.
Ask for a specific status explanation
A useful request identifies the claim number and asks for the original receipt date, whether written confirmation was required, whether temporary credit was issued, and the expected decision date. Check the actual account entries; a credit may have a description you did not recognize.
The usual extended period is up to 45 calendar days from the report, while some point-of-sale, foreign, and qualifying new-account transfers allow up to 90 calendar days. Do not add a fresh 45 days after the initial period. These rules and exceptions appear in § 1005.11.
Frequently asked questions
Does temporary credit mean I won?
No. It is an interim adjustment and may be reversed after a compliant investigation and required notices.
Can I request a review while Fifth Third is still investigating?
Yes. Bring the dates, transaction type, and correspondence. A pending status alone neither proves nor rules out a handling problem.
