Unauthorized ACH Debits at Regions: Recurring Withdrawals and Stop Payments
Recurring withdrawals require a precise account of what you agreed to and what changed. A Regions customer may need to dispute money already withdrawn while also preventing a future debit. Treat these as separate requests and keep a record of each.
Identify what was authorized
Locate the payment authorization, cancellation terms, and relevant merchant messages. Was the first debit permitted but later debits made after revocation? Was the amount wrong? Did you never authorize the company to debit the account? State the actual issue; a purchase dispute is not automatically an unauthorized-transfer claim.
Report posted errors promptly
Identify the account, date, amount, and reason for the suspected error through a verified bank channel. For the standard Regulation E error-resolution process, notice generally must arrive within 60 days after the first statement showing the error was sent. Do not wait for a merchant’s promised refund if doing so could jeopardize a reporting deadline.
A future stop payment has its own timing
For covered preauthorized electronic transfers, Regulation E generally permits an oral or written stop-payment notice at least three business days before the scheduled transfer. If the institution requires written confirmation, it must explain the requirement and provide the address; an oral order can lapse after 14 days without the requested confirmation. See § 1005.10(c).
Ask Regions which recurring transfer is covered by the request and preserve its acknowledgment. Stopping a payment does not necessarily cancel the underlying subscription or contract. Cancelling with the merchant does not necessarily document a bank stop-payment order.
Keep a record of any debit after cancellation
- Original authorization and changes to it.
- Revocation or cancellation notice and delivery evidence.
- Bank stop-payment request and any confirmation requirement.
- Later posted withdrawals and responses to your dispute.
If a debit still posts, describe why you believe it should not have occurred and when the bank or merchant received the relevant notices. A review can assess whether the issue involves authority, failure to stop a covered transfer, or another problem. Save each new statement as the matter continues.
Frequently asked questions
Does replacing my card stop an ACH debit?
An ACH debit can use account information rather than a card number. Identify the payment method and ask the bank about the appropriate action.
Does stopping payment erase what I owe the merchant?
Not necessarily. The underlying contractual obligation and the payment authorization are separate issues.
