PSECU Dispute Taking Too Long? Understanding the Investigation Clock

When a PSECU dispute remains open, “still investigating” tells you little about which deadline applies. Start with the date of the original qualifying error notice and the transaction category. A later status request should not automatically reset the clock.

The initial period and the extension are different

For many consumer electronic-transfer errors, the institution generally has 10 business days to investigate. It can usually extend the investigation up to 45 calendar days from receiving the notice by satisfying the provisional-credit and notice requirements. Certain new-account transfers have a 20-business-day initial period; qualifying point-of-sale, foreign, or new-account cases may allow up to 90 calendar days.

These periods are not interchangeable. Do not count 45 business days, and do not add 45 days after the initial investigation period. A credit-card billing dispute has a different timeline, explained in our FCBA guide.

Look for a written-confirmation request

An institution may require written confirmation of an oral error report. If it properly requests confirmation but does not receive it within 10 business days, provisional credit may not be required while it investigates. The written request and your proof of delivery therefore matter. This exception does not permit delaying the start of the investigation until a signed form arrives.

Send a focused status request

Identify the claim number and ask: What date did you receive my original error notice? Was written confirmation required and received? Has temporary credit been issued? Which investigation deadline are you applying, and why? Keep the response with the statement and earlier acknowledgment.

Check the account itself as well as messages. A credit entry, a reversed credit, and a final decision are different events. If you were told the decision was sent but cannot find it, request another copy and preserve when it was provided.

When a timing problem merits review

An unresolved claim without an explanation of credit, conflicting report dates, or a decision apparently outside the applicable period can warrant individual review. Exceptions and account facts still need examination. The underlying requirements appear in § 1005.11. You do not need to wait indefinitely for another update before seeking help, and routine follow-ups should not be assumed to extend legal filing deadlines.

Frequently asked questions

Does day 10 always require a refund?

No. The rule distinguishes investigation, provisional credit, final correction, and exceptions. A temporary credit is not a final refund.

What should I bring for a delay review?

Bring the first report, acknowledgment, written-confirmation request and response, credit notices, statements, and latest status message.
